Garamond: the W looks like two Vs superimposed, the lowercase A looks like it has a small bowl at the bottom, the extenders curve down.

Transitional differences: made the axis of rounded letters more vertical.  It also looked more tampered with than the old style of Garamond.

Helvetica: used for street signs and modern advertising, it looks very linear and has a uniform thickness throughout the letter.
